Meg Morrow, Executive Director of the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble is joined by composers Sam Spear, Jholey Garay and Migiwa “Miggy” Miyajima as they explore how performers, composers and music organizations can partner together to raise the visibility of great music composed by women, and enrich the musical landscape.

Meg Morrow is a percussionist, radio host, and arts enthusiast based in Portland, Oregon. Meg graduated from the University of Louisville Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program where she concentrated in jazz drumming. For over a decade, Meg has been performing, composing/arranging, touring, recording and teaching. She joined Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE) in 2022. She also hosts the AM Bridge on KMHD, Portland’s Jazz Radio, The PJCE began in 2007 to create and perform original jazz music that engages and supports our community’s diverse artists, cultures, and places. Sam Spear is a woodwind instrumentalist, prolific composer, arranger, and educator based in Boston, MA. She creates music that explores the broad spectrum of the jazz idiom. With Jazz Performance and Composition degrees, Spear has been a rising voice for gender equality in the jazz community. https://samspearmusic.com

 

 

 

Jhoely Garay is a guitarist, composer, and arranger from Mexico City, Mexico. Her work has been presented in important venues in various countries, such as The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, Cornelia St. Cafe, Aaron Davis Hall, The Clemente Soto Cultural Center, The Stone, Shea Center for Performing Arts, Blas Galindo Auditorium, Festival Internacional de Jazz de Córdoba, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Margaret Greenham Theater, Rolston Hall, National Arts Center in Mexico, among others.

 

 

 

 

Japanese composer in New York City, producer, pianist, and bandleader of the 17-piece Miggy Augmented Orchestra, Migiwa “Miggy” Miyajima creates large-scale works manifesting her distinct life experiences.
