Winner of the IAWM 2023 Education Grant

Dr. Estibaliz Bastesi

The International Alliance for Women in Music is awarding a $300 classroom grant to Dr. Estibaliz Gastesi of Bak Middle School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida. This grant will be used to commission a piano duet by Clare Shore and masterclass with the composer.

Dr. Estibaliz Gastesi has been a music teacher for Palm Beach Schools for the past 19 years. Since her appointment at Bak MSOA, she has presented lecture recitals on piano pedagogy and repertoire at local and state conferences of Florida State Music Teachers Association and at the Florida Music Educators Association annual All-State Conference in Tampa, presenting her students to acclaim. A native of the Basque Country, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the Lice Conservatory of Barcelona, where she studied with Roberto Bravo. A scholarship from the Basque government enabled her to come to the USA for graduate studies. She earned Artist Diploma and Master in Performance degrees at the Hartt School (CT), where she was a student of Luiz de Moura Castro. After studies with Caio Pagano, she finished her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Arizona on a full scholarship. Dr. Gastesi is a renowned music scholar, with articles by the University of Nevada Press and Ethnomusicology Online. She has lectured extensively at national and international conferences on a wide variety of subjects. Additionally, Dr. Gastesi is active as a concert pianist. She has performed as soloist with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, and, as a member of Piano Duo Gastesi-Bezerra, Dr. Gastesi has performed at prestigious venues in the US, Brazil, France, Serbia, and Spain. Her performances have been broadcast by Radio Nacional de España, Rádio Cultura (Brazil), Radio Beograd (Serbia), and WXEL (National Public Radio). Her CD of postmodern piano duets has received rave reviews by the press. Dr. Gastesi is part of the piano-duo-in-residence at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Most recently, her students performed at Merkin Hall in New York City and at the grand opening of the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach. She also was part of the judging panel at the IX International Piano Competition “Maria Herrero,” Granada, Spain, and performed a concert at the opening night of the competition.
